Leisure

Countryside
Guildford is an exceptionally beautiful borough, with rolling chalk downland, ancient woodland, a patchwork of fields, parks and open spaces. It is a wonderful area in which to unwind, whether walking, cycling, horseriding or simply picnicking. There are also a number of historic houses and other places to visit.
On the town
The town centre offers a wealth of restaurants, bars and cafes, to suit every taste, as well as nightclubs and a multiplex cinema. There is a wide range of specialist and nationally known retailers and there are plans for a major upgrade and extension to The Friary Shopping Centre, doubling its size with 60 new shops.
Culture
There are two leading provincial theatres, the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and the Electric Theatre. The Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra presents a huge variety of music from 16th century to the present day.
Five arts based festivals are regularly staged in Guildford, focusing on music, books, popular music and summer activities.
Plans are well advanced for a new £25m Civic Hall to provide the town with a leading entertainments venue for 1,700 people.
Sport
Guildford offers a wide range of sports and sports facilities. For example, Guildford Spectrum is one of the largest multi-facility leisure complexes in the UK. It attracts 1.5m visitors a year to its Olympic size ice rink, 4 swimming pools, health & fitness facilities, a 32 lane ten-pin bowling centre, a sports arena and athletics stadium. It also hosts major national and international sports events and other activities. Another new facility is Craggy Island, the National Class Dedicated Indoor Climbing Centre (www.craggy-island.com).
Meanwhile the University of Surrey is planning a spectacular new £33 million sports complex for the end of 2009. Students, elite athletes and the local community, including those with disabilities, will have access to:
• 50m, 8 lane swimming pool
• 3 multi-purpose halls, each accommodating 4 badminton courts
• 8 squash courts with show courts for 180+ spectators
• 8 outdoor floodlit tennis courts
• 6 indoor tennis courts
• 4 real tennis courts
• 13m climbing wall

• 8 football/rugby pitches
• 2 multi-purpose exercise studios

There are a number of excellent golf courses and the River Wey provides a contrast in leisure activities, from the exertions of Guildford Rowing Club to a tranquil narrowboat cruise.
Further afield
It is impossible to list all the world-class opportunities within a few miles of Guildford but consider watersports on the Solent, golf at Wentworth, shooting at Bisley, chalk stream trout fishing on the Test, watching the Epsom Derby or listening to opera at Glyndebourne.
Hotels
Guildford boasts a wide range of hotels, from the 16th Century Angel Posting House & Livery where today’s visitors are following in the footsteps of Nelson, Dickens, and Byron, to Premier Travel Inn and Travel Lodge budget hotels and hotel/conference centres such as the Mandolay and Holiday Inn. A 95 bed Radisson hotel is also planned.
